WHAT ARE SOBEYS’ ANIMAL WELFARE COMMITMENTS?

Since 2021, Sobeys has published multiple versions of the following Animal Welfare Statement:

“In 2016, we committed to source only cage-free eggs by the end of 2025… Retailers and suppliers agree, these are the right goals to work towards. Since the retailers made these commitments, we’ve learned that the supply chain needs more time to adapt and change. At Sobeys, we are committed to continue working to these goals.” — Approved by President and CEO, Michael Medline, July 2024.

Since 2021, Sobeys has reported no increase in cage-free progress

ARE SOBEYS’ ANIMAL WELFARE COMMITMENTS GUIDED BY THE FIVE FREEDOMS?

Sobeys claims they are guided by the Five Freedoms, but these cannot be met by cage confinement:

  1. Freedom from hunger, malnutrition and thirst by providing ready access to fresh water and a diet that maintains good health and vigour

  2. Freedom from pain, injury and disease through prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment

  3. Freedom from fear and distress by providing conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering

  4. Freedom from physical and thermal discomfort by providing an appropriate environment, including shelter and a comfortable resting area

  5. Freedom to express normal patterns of behaviour by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind
