ACCOUNTABILITY FOR SOBEYS BROKEN CAGE-FREE PROMISE

From grocery stores, to sporting events, to award shows, Canadians are standing up for caged hens .

A decade after promising to go cage-free by 2025, Sobeys is still supporting cruel cage confinement for hens – despite growing public outcry and years of commitments made by Sobeys’ leadership team.

We’re holding Sobeys accountable. Join us by urging the company to finally publish a plan for cage-free progress.

A YEAR OF ACTION FOR HENS:

Nationwide DAY OF ACTION at Sobeys Stores

NOVEMBER 29, 2025

Sobeys is becoming known across Canada for cage cruelty, sparking protests at stores across the country. Protesters gathered in 10 cities demanding action in Calgary, Charlottetown, Edmonton, London, Montreal, Ottawa, St. John’s, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg.

These demonstrations marked the fourth nationwide action since August in what has become the largest corporate cage-free campaign in Canadian history.

Coast to coast, consumers and advocates exposed Sobeys’ cage cruelty using megaphones and signs reading “Sobeys Home Grown Factory Farming” and “Premium Prices for Factory Farmed Eggs.” These large-scale protests drew media coverage from Global News and CityNews.

SObeys’ Art of Deception at the National Gallery of Canada

OCTOBER 2, 2025

Over an elegant backdrop of the Sobey Art Award Exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, advocates unveiled the hidden truth about the award’s funders.

As the first speaker took to the podium, Animal Justice delivered a powerful message about Sobeys’ caged hens—exposing how the grocery giant remains deeply entrenched in the art of deception when it comes to animal welfare.

WORLD EGG DAY Protests ACROSS THE COUNTRY

OCTOBER 11, 2025

Following World Egg Day, advocates across the country escalated with a third day of action on October 11.

More than 130 demonstrators participated in nationwide protests in front of Sobeys and Empire-owned stores in Calgary, Charlottetown, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, St. John’s, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg.

The protests drew media attention from national outlets, including CTV that covered the story in Winnipeg. Protesters held signs highlighting the hidden suffering behind the eggs on Sobeys’ shelves while mobile billboards drove through busy shopping areas for the entire day. Through six cities, trucks displayed video clips of the cage conditions of a Sobeys egg supplier and a link to Animal Justice’s exposé video.

Sobeys’ Shareholder Meeting CRASHED by Mobile Billboard

SEPTEMBER 11, 2025

At the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in Nova Scotia, investors in Sobeys’ parent company Empire were confronted with a mobile billboard circling the movie theatre hosting the event.

Because of the truck, the Nova Scotia communities of New Glasgow and Stellarton—home to Sobeys’ headquarters—learned all about our investigation into a Sobeys egg supplier that still houses hens in cruel cages. We made sure it was the talk of the town by scheduling the truck to drive around the small cities for the two full days around the meeting.

Wherever Sobeys goes, the truth behind their animal welfare claims follows.

SObeys Called Out for CRUELTY at National Bank Open

AUGUST 7, 2025

During the championship match of the National Bank Open at Sobeys Stadium, Animal Justice took to the skies to expose ongoing cruelty in Sobeys’ egg supply chain.

As thousands of spectators in the stands watched the final game unfold, an airplane circled overhead towing a banner that read SOBEYSDROPPEDTHEBALL.CA. Demonstrators seated in the Sobeys Fresh Zone unfurled a banner, drawing attention to the planned release of undercover investigation footage from a Sobeys egg supplier.

Brave the Cage Demonstrations

AUGUST 2 & AUGUST 30, 2025

On August 2, Animal Justice brought Brave the Cage to four Canadian cities—Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary. Outside Sobeys, IGA, and Farm Boy stores, we invited shoppers to spend five minutes inside a cramped wire cage in exchange for $20.

Participants got a glimpse of what life is like for the millions of hens in Sobeys’ supply chain. Many were shocked to learn that 80% of the eggs Sobeys sells still come from caged hens, despite the company’s decade-old promise to go 100% cage-free by 2025.

The action drew national media coverage, and expanded to eight Canadian cities on August 30.
